How To Fix The Cache_Initialization_Failed Error

Reader Question:
“Hi Wally, My computer shows the cache_initialization_failed blue screen error. I can’t get it to work again. Please help me fix it, Thanks.“ - Joseph D., Australia

Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:

  • Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
  • Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.

Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.

Wally’s Answer: The Cache_Initialization_Failed error appears on a blue screen and restarts the computer. This error appears on almost all versions of Windows.

Problem

The Cache_Initialization_Failed or STOP 0×00000066 error appears and the computer restarts.

Cause

The Cache_Initialization_Failed error occurs when a device driver is incompatible with the hardware.

Solution

Here are some ways to fix the Cache_Initialization_Failed error:

Start The Computer In Safe Mode If It Restarts Too Much

You can’t troubleshoot a computer when it just keeps restarting. If that’s the case then you should start Windows in safe mode. Since safe mode uses very few drivers to load Windows, there’s a far less chance that a blue screen error will occur. Click here to learn about how to use safe mode.

Install Windows Updates

Installing important Windows updates can help solve this problem. These updates can be installed from safe mode (with networking) as well. Here’s how to install Windows updates:

  1. Press Windows Key > type windows update > click Windows Update to launch it.
    CACHE_INITIALIZATION_FAILED - Windows update - Check for Updates 2 -- Windows Wally
  2. Click Check for updates
  3. Click Install updates to install these updates, this can take some time depending on the number of updates to be installed.

Use System Restore To Fix The Issue

System restore is a feature of Windows that lets you reverse changes made to the computer. This is done by restoring old system files. System restore can be started from within Windows, through Safe Mode, and from a bootable Windows installation DVD/USB. Click here to learn more about system restore.

Update Device Drivers To Solve The Problem

Since this error results from driver issues, it be corrected by updating driver software. You can update drivers by downloading them from the hardware vendor’s website and installing them on your computer. Chipset and Video drivers are important drivers to update.

Go to your computer vendor’s website and look for your computer. Once you find it, download its drivers. Make sure to download the correct driver or your version of Windows. Windows 7 drivers usually work on Windows 8 if a Windows 8 driver is not available.

Install the drivers one-by-one and restart when prompted. If you are new to updating drivers or if you don’t have the time to deal with this, then you should use driver utilities like DriverDoc to download and install driver software for you.

Is Your PC Healthy?

I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry.

Happy Computing! :)
