How To Fix The DFS_FILE_SYSTEM Error

Reader Question:
“Hi Wally, My computer is randomly getting the same error from DFS_FILE_SYSTEM. How is this happening and how can I fix it?“- Shawn L., Australia

Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:

  • Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
  • Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.

Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.

Wally’s Answer: The DFS_file_system error is usually caused by problems in the computer registry. Blue screen errors like this can surprise you, but fixing them isn’t that difficult once you know the cause of the issue.

Problem

The computer restarts at random times after showing the DFS_file_system error on a blue screen. Different application programs may also give errors, lock-up, or slow down due to this error.

Cause

The DFS_file_system error is usually caused by an unstable Windows registry. A system file might have become corrupt or damaged.

Solution

Here are some ways to get rid of the DFS_file_system error:

Scan The Computer For Viruses

The DFS_file_system error appears due to viruses as well. The virus may have been able to escape from the anti-virus because of an outdated virus database. Update the anti-virus and scan for viruses again.

If you are not using an anti-virus program then you should install a free anti-virus program like Avast or AVG. Scan the computer and restart it.

Use The Last Known Configuration To Fix The DFS_FILE_SYSTEM Error

This fix should work for Windows XP but not Windows 7 and later. If the computer restarts due to DFS_file_system a few times, the computer should start to a screen similar to the one shown below. It’s called the Advanced Boot Options screen. Here you can choose to start the computer using the Last Known Good Configuration.

Fix Registry Issues Using A Registry Cleaner

This error is caused by a corrupt registry, so scanning and correcting the registry should solve the problem for us. To do this, we recommend that you install a trusted registry cleaner. We recommend using WinThruster from Solvusoft. Although there are other registry cleaners, this is one of the better registry cleaners out there.

I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry.

Happy Computing! :)
