How to deal with csc.exe Errors?

Reader Question: “Hi Wally, When I restart or shut down my computer I get this error saying csc.exe-Application error. How do I fix this?” – Michelle T., USA

Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:

  • Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
  • Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.

Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.

Wally’s Answer: The CSC.exe process can cause problems due to registry problems in the operating system. It can also be caused by infectious malware. The CSC.exe process can belong to HowbaniSoft or Microsoft Visual Studio. These are reliable sources, but malware can sometimes disguise itself as normal processes, and cause problems in the computer.

What is CSC.exe?

The CSC.exe process on your computer may belong to the HowbaniSoft Internet Cafe System Client, the Visual C# Command Line Compiler, Microsoft Visual Studio, or the Comodo System Cleaner software.

Deceptive Malware

Malware programs can be deceptively named anything. So the CSC.exe process might be a threat. Check where the file is located on your computer. If a non-Microsoft .exe file is stored in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folder, then it might be a spyware, virus, trojan, worm, or some other infection. Some Anti-spyware software includes Spybot – Search & Destroy, and WinThruster.

Checking CSC.exe

This can be easily confirmed by opening the Task Manager and checking where the CSC.exe process is running from. To do this you will need to launch the Task Manager.

To bring-up the Task manager in Windows 7, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete on your keyboard, and press the button labeled ”Start Task Manager“. Be sure to check the spelling of its name “CSC.exe.” In the Processes tab right-click CSC.exe and then click Properties.

You should see its path after Location: If it is in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 then it might be a malicious program. Right-click CSC.exe and then click Open File Location to see the file itself.

The file CSC.exe is should be located in a subfolder of C:\Program Files. The file itself should be about 48 KiloBytes in size. It may also be 75.18 KiloBytes, or 78.49 KiloBytes, or some other size.

CSC.exe Error

CSC.EXE-Application Error. This application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142) Click OK to terminate this application.

The CSC.exe error may indicate a registry conflict in the operating system. This error should be removed promptly, as it can cause harm to the computer. You should download WinThruster to fix the registry and remove malware from the computer.

Is Your PC Healthy?

I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry. Happy Computing! :)
