Troubleshooting No video playback in Windows 8 Professional

Reader Question:
“Hi Wally, I have a Windows 8 laptop and i’m having no video playback problems on my computer. I’m trying to play video on it but whenever I do that, all I see is a blank screen. I know the video is running because I can hear the sound. What should I do?”   - Mark J., USA

Before addressing any computer issue, I always recommend scanning and repairing any underlying problems affecting your PC health and performance:

  • Step 1 : Download PC Repair & Optimizer Tool (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step 2 : Click “Start Scan” to find Windows registry issues that could be causing PC problems.
  • Step 3 : Click “Repair All” to fix all issues.

Setting up weekly (or daily) automatic scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running fast and trouble-free.

Wally’s Answer: Some people have had this problem with their computers, particularly with Sony Vaio and Acer laptops running Windows 8.

When you play the video you can hear the audio but you cannot see the video. This might be happening with online streaming video as well. There are fixes that you can try to remedy this.

Problem

No video playback on Windows 8 laptop when a video is played.

Cause

  • Incompatible video driver
  • Damaged or corrupt DirectX files.

Solution

Here are some things you can do to fix this problem:

Install the latest video driver

Make sure that your computer’s drivers are updated. Sometimes an incompatibility problem is fixed by the manufacturer with the latest driver update. To do this look at the bottom of your laptop or on the side of your desktop computer for a sticker that has the service tag or product id printed on it.

Now go to your computer manufacturer’s website and enter the service tag or product id to see the latest drivers. Download and Install these drivers and see if that fixes the problem. You can also try using software like DriverDoc to automatically find and install the appropriate driver updates.

Re-Install DirectX to fix no video playback problem

Issues with DirectX can sometimes lead to video playback problems. DirectX is used by Windows for rendering graphics. You can see instructions on installing DirectX here.

I always recommend to my readers to regularly use a trusted registry cleaner and optimizer such as WinThruster or CCleaner. Many problems that you encounter can be attributed to a corrupt and bloated registry.
